For some time now, I've been thinking about providing a sporadically-updated preview of upcoming movies scheduled for theatrical release in the Indianapolis area. I won't mention the big movies headed for thousands of screens across the country, since they get more than enough coverage anyway. But anything and everything else will be noted here, as long as I know about it.
And indeed, I am not yet quite as omniscient as I would like to be, so there are probably several movies that should be mentioned below, but are not. I regret all omissions. In the unlikely event that anyone else is reading this- and in the much more likely event that this person can provide additional information about a limited release film coming soon to a theater in the Indianapolis area- then please let me know by way of a comment.
For this first attempt, at least, the films will be presented in order of release date. Within a particular date, titles will be in alphabetical order, based on the first letter of the first word in the title, not counting "The" or "A". Several abbreviations will be used to designate sources of information, for either a release date, or the description of a film:
FB: The official Facebook page for a film.
OS: The official US web site for a film.
TS: A theater's online schedule for a given week, or date.
TDPF: The American theatrical distributor's page for the film in question.
And do keep in mind that things change, so some of these movies will open in Indy on a date other than the one mentioned below, while some titles will play at a local theater that is not noted below, and some of these films never will be seen on a big screen within a hundred-plus miles of Indianapolis. A recent example of this last scenario would be Desert Dancer. Several weeks ago, it was on the "Coming Soon" tab of the Keystone Art Cinema's web page, and a poster for the film was up in the theater. But soon after Desert Dancer opened in a number of cities outside of Indiana, the poster was nowhere to be seen at the theater, and the movie disappeared from the "Coming Soon" tab. So there you are.
Anyhow, with all that out of the way, off we go....
May 7
Heaven Adores You: According to the official site for this documentary, Heaven Adores You "is an intimate, meditative inquiry into the life and music of Elliott Smith (1969-2003)"; it will have one screening Thursday evening at the Studio Movie Grill, College Park (TS).

Dior and I: A documentary that "brings the viewer inside the storied world of the Christian Dior fashion house with a privileged, behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Raf Simons’ first haute couture collection as its new artistic director" (OS); at the Keystone Art Cinema (TS).
Kill Me Three Times: Simon Pegg is a hit man in this "darkly comedic thriller" featuring "three tales
of murder, mayhem, blackmail and revenge" (OS); two shows per day at the AMC Indianapolis 17 with IMAX (TS).
Piku: The Facebook page for this Bollywood film says that it is a "Comedy, Drama", and that it stars Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan, but if they have anything close to a plot synopsis there, then they've done a mighty fine job of hiding it; at the AMC Castleton Square 14 (TS).
The Salt of the Earth: A documentary about photographer Sebastião Salgado, whose "life and work are revealed to us by his son, Juliano, who went with him during his last travels, and by Wim Wenders, himself a photographer" (OS); at the Keystone Art Cinema (TS).

May 13
Lion: It's an Indian film, in Telugu with English subtitles, according to this page for the film on the site of the Cinemark theater chain, and it starts Wednesday at the Cinemark Movies 8 in Greenwood- and that's about all I know about it, since the official Facebook page linked in the title has very little other information, and I haven't had a chance to watch the trailer yet.
May 15
Far from the Madding Crowd: "Based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching willfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William Boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor." (TDPF) Exclusive to the Keystone Art Cinema (OS).
Kumiko the Treasure Hunter: The plot description on the film's Facebook page is spare: "A lonely Japanese woman abandons her structured life in Tokyo to seek a satchel of money rumored to be hidden in the Minnesota wilderness." But wait until you see the trailer and the even cooler "teaser" on the official site (linked in the title)- those are something else altogether.... Another exclusive at the Keystone Art Cinema, per the film's official site.
Where Hope Grows: "Calvin Campbell is a former professional baseball player sent to an early retirement due to his panic attacks at the plate... His life is in a slow downward spiral when it is suddenly awakened and invigorated by the most unlikely person – Produce, a young-man with Down syndrome who works at the local grocery store.... Where Hope Grows is a story of finding redemption through faith, hope and love." Opens at the Village Park 17, AMC Indianapolis 17 with IMAX, Greenwood 14, Hamilton 16 and IMAX, and the Metropolis 18, per the official site.

Lambert and Stamp: "KIT LAMBERT and CHRIS STAMP, aspiring filmmakers, set out to make a cinema vérité documentary about the mod world of rock and roll, but sidetracked instead into managing and developing the sonic powerhouse that came to be called THE WHO. Their gorgeously propulsive footage—the rock documentary that was never completed—lays a foundation for director JAMES D. COOPER’s kaleidoscopic study of an era and a rare friendship’s creative bond." (TDPF) At the Keystone Art Cinema.
May 29
The Connection: "A stylish, 70's-period crime thriller inspired by true events, The Connection tells the story of real-life Marseille magistrate Pierre Michel (Academy Award® Winner Jean Dujardin, The Artist, The Wolf Of Wall Street) and his relentless crusade to dismantle the most notorious drug smuggling operation in history: the French Connection." Keystone Art Cinema. (TDPF)
I'll See You in My Dreams: This "vibrant, funny, and heartfelt film" is about "a widow and former songstress" who "discovers that life can begin anew at any age". Blythe Danner plays the main character; Mary Kay Place, Rhea Perlman, Malin Akerman and Sam Elliott also are in the cast. Keystone Art Cinema (OS)
In the Name of My Daughter: André Téchiné directs this "gripping real-life thriller", which stars Catherine Deneuve as Renee, the owner of a casino in Nice, and Guillaume Canet as Maurice Agnelet, "a lawyer and Renee’s business advisor". In 1977, Renee's daughter Agnes is head over heels in love with Maurice, which eventually leads to Agnes voting against her mother at a meeting of the casino's shareholders. After trying to kill herself, Agnes vanishes. "Thirty years on, Maurice Agnelet remains the prime suspect in a murder case with no body and no proof of his guilt. Convinced of his involvement, Renee is prepared to fight to the bitter end to see him put behind bars…" (TDPF) Keystone Art Cinema.

I Am Big Bird: The Carroll Spinney Story : Although there doesn't seem to be a mention of the screening on the film's official site, this documentary about the man behind (inside?) both Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch will have a one-time-only showing at Franklin's historic Artcraft Theatre on Saturday, May 30, at 7:30 PM.
June 5
Beyond the Mask: John Rhys-Davies is in the cast of this "revolutionary new family film that brings history to life in a faith-filled adventure" about the "leading mercenary for the British East India Company", who "has just been double-crossed and now is on the run in the American Colonies. Working to redeem his name and win back the affections of the woman with whom he's never been fully truthful, Will now hides behind a new mask in hopes of thwarting his former employer." AMC Castleton Square 14 (OS)
Sunshine Superman: "A heart-racing documentary portrait of Carl Boenish, the father of the BASE jumping movement, whose early passion for skydiving led him to ever more spectacular –and dangerous– feats of foot-launched human flight." Keystone Art Cinema. (TDPF)
July 10
Roar: "An unprecedented––and wholly unpredictable––action-adventure, Roar follows wildlife preservationist Hank (The Exorcist producer Noel Marshall in his sole and career-derailing turn as an actor and director), who lives harmoniously alongside a menagerie of over 100 untamed animals.... When his wife and children arrive (real-life wife Tippi Hedren, The Birds, and step-daughter Melanie Griffith, Working Girl, and his sons John and Jerry Marshall) for a visit, a long-brewing battle for dominance between the lions erupts and threatens their very lives". (TDPF) At the Keystone Art Cinema on July 10 and 11 as part of this year's Midnight Madness lineup. (TS)
That's it for now, but I plan to be back in the next week or so with more- the movies we might get in the near future, the current movies I would love to see in a theater, the movies we did not/will not see in Indy-area theaters, and the much too competitive race for the dullest, most boring movie theater in greater Indianapolis.
Until then....
